It takes about two million euros in net assets to be considered wealthy in Luxembourg, according to new data that highlights rising perceptions of affluence in one of Europe’s richest economies.
The 2025 Luxembourg Wealth Survey, conducted by Luxembourg research institute ILRES for Swissquote Bank Europe between 20 April and 2 May, gathered responses from 1,697 residents, including 652 Swissquote clients, interviewed in English, French and Luxembourgish.
Defining wealth
The survey found that the average estimated net worth among respondents was 924,000 euros, less than half the amount they consider necessary to feel wealthy. Swissquote clients placed the threshold higher, at about 2.5 million euros, while other respondents said 1.7 million euros would suffice.
Respondents with annual household earnings above 365,000 euros said they would need around 3.8 million euros to feel rich. For those earning below 50,000 euros, the figure stood closer to 1.5 million euros. Generation Z respondents, aged between eighteen and twenty-eight, said 1.2 million euros would be enough to feel wealthy.
Comfort and luxury
Luxembourg residents said a gross annual household income of 249,000 euros is needed to feel financially comfortable, and 408,000 euros to afford what they consider a luxurious lifestyle. Swissquote clients again placed those figures higher, at about 465,000 euros for a life of comfort and luxury.
While wealth was primarily associated with financial means, respondents also linked it to lifestyle and personal freedom. Freedom, cited by 76 percent, and well-being, cited by 70 percent, were the most common associations, ahead of money at 61 percent and assets at 47 percent.
A majority said wealth also means having flexibility in how and where they work, and 76 percent prioritised a healthy work-life balance over career success.
