This week’s overview of transfers, appointments, promotions and other career news in the fund and asset management community in and around Luxembourg includes updates from M&G, BDO, HSBC, Governance.com, the Luxembourg School of Business and the Luxembourg Competition Association. 

Edward Boots

Edward Boots (photo) has been appointed to M&G’s Real Estate Finance team as part of the company’s expansion of its origination capabilities in response to growing client demand for European real estate credit. Based in Amsterdam, Boots will be responsible for sourcing and executing new lending opportunities across continental Europe, working alongside M&G’s existing origination team and its network of investment professionals in major cities such as Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan, Paris, and Stockholm. He will report to Dan Riches, head of Real Estate Finance at M&G.

Boots brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as head of Real Estate Finance, The Netherlands, at HSBC Continental Europe, where he managed a significant real estate loan portfolio. His prior roles include co-head of Real Estate Clients and vice president of Origination for Commercial Real Estate at Deutsche Bank AG.

M&G’s expansion comes at a time when traditional banks are pulling back from refinancing commercial loans in Europe, creating opportunities for alternative lenders like M&G. Commenting on the appointment, Riches noted the importance of increasing the team’s capacity and network to meet the growing investment needs of M&G’s global institutional client base.

Marnix Rosendaal 

Marnix Rosendaal started as desk head for the Netherlands at HSBC Private Bank Luxembourg on 1 September, as he announced via LinkedIn. HSBC focuses on entrepreneurs, family offices, and ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWI). In addition, Patrick Rutgers and Ruud van Haperen have joined the private bank as senior relationship managers for the Dutch market.

Rosendaal previously served as head of wealth management for Deutsche Bank Netherlands for the past four years. Prior to that, he spent nearly 15 years at Van Lanschot, where he held roles including manager of private banking and managing director.

Alain Lam

Alain Lam has been appointed as the new managing partner of BDO in Luxembourg, effective 1 October 2024. He succeeds Daniel Croisé, who has completed two mandates since his appointment in 2017, during which time the firm experienced significant growth.

Lam’s focus will be on driving innovation and delivering client-centric solutions, with a strong emphasis on quality. He aims to further strengthen BDO Luxembourg’s position as a leading provider of professional services in the region.

Henning Swabey 

Henning Swabey has been appointed chief commercial officer at Governance.com, a Luxembourg-based funds data and technology company, effective September 25, 2024. Swabey joins with a strong track record in leadership and client-focused strategies, aiming to drive the company’s growth and commercial strategy forward.

In his new role, Swabey will focus on expanding Governance.com’s market presence and enhancing its solutions for the financial sector, particularly in areas such as data management, automation, and regulatory challenges. 

Ian Atkinson, CEO of Governance.com, highlighted Swabey’s understanding of the funds landscape and his alignment with the company’s strategic goals, while Martin Vogel, chairman of the board, emphasized the appointment as a reinforcement of the company’s dedication to innovation and growth.

Katrien Veranneman

Katrien Veranneman has been appointed as the new president of the Luxembourg Competition Association, succeeding the outgoing president after 17 years in the role. Vincent Wellens has also joined as the association’s new secretary. Marianne Decker takes over as treasurer, replacing Nicolas Decker, who co-founded the association and served as treasurer for 17 years.

The outgoing president will remain a member of the board and has been appointed honorary president in recognition of their contributions to the association.

Patrick Vanhoudt

Patrick Vanhoudt, Prof. Dr. (Econ.), has been appointed as the new vice dean for degree programs at Luxembourg School of Business.

Dr. Vanhoudt brings nearly 30 years of experience, having started his career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before moving to the European Investment Bank (EIB). At the EIB, he advised on economic growth, led project evaluations, and contributed as a ghostwriter for a former president.
