Financial services provider Apex Group on Monday said it has appointed Tony Alfonso as global head of valuation, a newly created role that will be in charge of valuation advisory services.

Alfonso joined Apex in January after more than 14 years at consultancy BDO in the United States. He brings more than 25 years of financial services experience providing valuation and transaction advisory services to a wide range of clients and industries. Alfonso is widely recognized as an industry leader, offering expert witness testimony in several jurisdictions related to valuation matters, Apex said.

“In an environment of uncertain global financial markets, growing conflicts of interest, and emerging regulatory challenges, it is more important than ever for asset managers to partner with experts to help them navigate the portfolio valuation process and provide objective advice,” said Georges Archibald, chief innovation officer and managing director, Americas at Apex Group, in a statement.

Apex’s valuation services unit provide periodic valuations – including for illiquid financial instruments such as equity, debt and derivatives to meet their specific reporting requirements, throughout all stages of a fund’s lifecycle. Apex offers these services to a range of investor types, including private equity and debt funds, hedge funds, venture capital, mutual funds, structured credit, family offices, pension funds as well as corporates, insurance companies, banking and other financial institutions.

“I am excited to be joining Apex Group and look forward to building our Valuation Services to provide our clients with a robust and transparent valuation framework which meets their specific requirements,” Alfonso said. “Global regulatory developments continue to impact valuation practices in the asset management industry and necessitate greater valuation support as well as evidence of a proper control infrastructure – all of which Apex Group, as an independent, global financial services provider is well equipped to provide.”

At BDO, Alfonso was most recently global valuation leader in their international capital finance group. In conjunction with this, Tony co-led the United States Corporate Finance Practice at BDO and was the Valuation & Capital Markets Analysis National Managing Principal. Tony began his career with roles at Mellon Bank, Arthur Andersen, KPMG and Houlihan Lokey.
