Capital Group and Impax are the asset management firms that won the 2022 Morningstar Awards for Excellence in Investing in Luxembourg, the investment research firm has announced. Funds managed by Fundsmith, Comgest, BlueBay and Capital Group have won individual Morningstar awards.

In the category section, four investment funds of these international asset managers have each won an award, respectively in the categories for best global equity fund, best Europe equity fund, best Euro bond fund and best Euro allocation fund. The research firm also announced its Morningstar Asset Manager Awards, and the Morningstar Asset Manager Sustainable-Investing Awards.

“The objective of the Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence is to identify those funds and fund groups that have added the most value within the context of their risk/return profiles over the past year and over the longer-term,” said Jeffrey Schumacher, Director of Manager Research at Morningstar. “Our 2022 winners, across equity, fixed-income and multi-asset categories, demonstrated impressive consistency against a challenging and rapidly changing economic environment.”

Asset Manager Award

The 2022 Morningstar Asset Manager Award was won by Los Angeles-based Capital Group, a global asset management firm with some 2,600 billon dollars under management.

“Capital Group’s multimanager system is key to its success,” said Schumacher. “Dividing each fund into independently run sleeves lets managers invest in line with their styles, enhancing diversification and reducing the overall portfolio’s volatility. The funds’ analyst-led research portfolios help develop the next generation and recruit top talent with the promise of running money from the start. The result is an investment culture marked by lengthy tenures, strong manager fund ownership, and competitive long-term records.”

“For over 90 years, we have been singularly focused on bringing investors the best global investment opportunities through long-term active management,” said Marnix van den Berge, managing director, financial intermediaries, Luxembourg, Belgium and France at Capital Group. “We are honoured that Morningstar has awarded Capital Group as Best Asset Manager and recognised us for the strength, stability, and strong results of our fund range.”

Asset Manager Sustainable-Investing Award

London-based asset manager Impax Asset Management walked away with Morningstar’s award for sustainable investing. Founded in 1998, Impax is a specialist asset manager, with nearly 50 billion dollars in both listed and private markets strategies, investing in the opportunities arising from the transition to a more sustainable global economy.

“We consider Impax a leader in sustainable investing as it has been at the heart of its culture since the firm’s foundation in 1998. Across its fund range, ESG considerations are incorporated at every stage of the investment process and rely on the firm’s robust proprietary ESG research and tools. The high quality of ESG research is further exemplified by the regular publication of insightful thought leadership pieces. Impax’s commitment to sustainable investing also shines through its people. True to its DNA, the firm has also exemplified strong active ownership practices,” Schumacher said.

Best global equity fund

The Fundsmith Equity Fund was awarded the Luxembourg award for the Best Global Equity Fund award, just like in Belgium and the Netherlands. The fund is managed out of London by fund manager Terry Smith. The Fundsmith Equity R Eur Acc class holds a silver-class Morningstar Analyst Rating. Fundsmith has a total of 26 billion pounds under management.

Best Europe equity fund

The Morningstar award for the best Europe equity fund went to the Comgest Growth Europe fund, which holds 4.8 billion euro in assets. This fund also holds a silver-class Morningstar Analyst Rating. With headquarters in Paris, Comgest has some 47 billion dollars in assets under management.

Best Euro bond fund

The BlueBay Investment Grade Bond Fund won the award for the Best Euro Bond Fund. As part of Canada’s RBC Global Asset Management, which has some 486 billion dollars under management, BlueBay Asset Management is a fixed income specialist with a global presence.

Best Euro allocation fund

The prize for Best Euro Allocation Fund was awarded to the Capital Group Global Allocation Fund Luxembourg. Los Angeles-based Capital Group has assets under management of approximately 2600 billion dollars.

The awards were determined by a combination of risk-adjusted medium- to long-term performance track records and Morningstar’s forward-looking rating for funds, the Morningstar Analyst Rating, complemented by the Morningstar Quantitative Rating, or MQR, when necessary. The MQR is a quantitative rating that seeks to emulate the Analyst Rating and uses the same Gold, Silver, Bronze, Neutral, Negative scale as the former.

The Morningstar Asset Manager – Sustainable Investing Awards are determined by a combination of Morningstar’s ESG Commitment Level for asset managers, along with Morningstar’s sustainability metrics for funds and Manager Research analysts’ knowledge of the fund groups they assess in the context of the Morningstar Analyst Rating for funds.
