Delivering legislation, regulation and standards that foster sustainable and a more equitable development is central to tackling sustainability issues. One impediment is corporate lobbying designed to mitigate or even thwart effective policy changes. We urge other investors to join us in ramping up engagement with companies on this important topic.

With sea levels continuing to rise, coastal flooding is already a considerable – and growing – economic threat to low-lying regions. A recent academic study – presented at the latest conference of the Global Research Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Finance (GRASFI) – looks into whether investors account for and hedge this hazard by exploiting country exposure to such floods.

Agriculture intersects with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular zero hunger, life on land and life below water, good health and responsible production. Around the world, more than 70% of freshwater supplies is used for agriculture and, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the industry generates 22% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Without action, capping global warming at 1.5°C will be impossible and biodiversity loss will continue.

Achieving health equity – the state, or goal, of ensuring that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health[1] – can deliver benefits for wider society, most notably an increased productive life expectancy.
